Mayor announces Cultural Strategy Group for London
Ken Livingstone, Mayor of London, has announced the names of the people who will help him develop a cultural strategy for London.
The Cultural Strategy Group for London (CSGL) will have a diverse membership reflecting the breadth and vibrancy of cultural life in London, and will be responsible for developing a strategy taking in theatre, music, heritage, sport and tourism.
Chairing the group will be Yasmin Anwar, Commissioning Editor for Multicultural Programmes at Channel Four. Other members include Nicholas Serota, Tate Director, Wozzy Brewster, Acting Chair of the London Youth Arts Network, Yvonne Marson, former England netball player, Ben Knowles, Editor of the New Musical Express, and Eenasul Fateh (professionally known as Aladin), a former international management consultant who is now a magician and live artist.
Mr Livingstone said: "London is arguably the cultural capital of the world. I want to cement and bolster that position while at the same time ensuring our cultural policy reaches out to the whole of London.
"I want to make sure the city's cultural life is one that all Londoners feel able to contribute to, not just a cultural elite. Culture touches all of our lives but is too often taken for granted, rather than cherished and celebrated. I want a city in which everyone values our cultural diversity, where more people attend and take part in arts events, play sport and keep fit, and I want to look at new ways to attract public and private money to help us do that.
"The membership of the Group reflects our aim to make diversity and equality a central element of the strategy. Bringing people with a high national profile together with those who have real expertise at a grass roots level will help us bring the cultural best out of our city."
Applications and nominations to the board were of the highest quality and it is likely that other people will be approached to advise on specific issues as they arise.
The first meeting of CSGL will take place on Wednesday, July 19, at 5pm at a venue to be announced soon. This will be open to the press and the public and there will be an opportunity for the media to meet members.
