Ken Livingstone welcomes visitors for Eid celebration
11-1-2001 014
Ken Livingstone, Mayor of London, wished London 'Eid Mubarak' at a reception held at the GLA headquarters on Wednesday night.
He said: 'I would like to see all of London's communities not just understand and respect festivals like this, but to celebrate them together.
'Coming after Ramadan's whole month of fasting and abstinence, Eid-ul-fitr is the most auspicious day on the Muslim calendar. It is a day of great joy and festivity in which Muslims come together and celebrate, regardless of class or race.
'This is a city in which I want to see every community live, prosper and achieve its fullest potential. Part of achieving this is to demonstrate our support for the multi-faith, multi-cultural city that we are so proud to be citizens of. My commitment to anti-racism, and the position I take against Islamaphobia and other forms of intolerance, is to me of fundamental importance.'
