Sustainable development policies

All policies in the plan promote sustainable development, including mitigating and adapting to the impacts of climate change, as well as promoting health and equality.

The concept of sustainable development runs throughout the London Plan and all its policies, starting from the Mayor's vision and objectives set out in the Preamble and Introduction.

This overarching policy brings together a number of other policies within this plan to demonstrate the integrated nature of sustainability policies. It sets out the criteria that will guide the approach to development in London. Whilst this addresses future development, there is also the need to make the existing environment and buildings more sustainable. Policies for retro-fitting are included in Chapter 4B.
