Design and safety policies

Structures across and into rivers and canals are vital for effective communications and service provision. Bridges are also monuments and tourist attractions.

New structures should be restricted to structures that support activities that specifically require a waterside location or help Londoners to appreciate the Blue Ribbon Network. Where structures are needed they should minimise their navigational, hydrological and biodiversity impacts.

Safety on and near to the Blue Ribbon Network should be a key priority for all organisations involved in the management and stewardship of the water space. The principles of water safety should be observed in existing and new developments and in the safety procedures of all those using the Blue Ribbon Network.
